Susan Toman
is originally from Canada. She holds a Master's
degree from the University of Michigan in Keyboard Instruments where she
specialized in harpsichord, piano, and fortepiano. Her primary teachers there
included Louis Nagel, Edward Parmentier, and Penelope Crawford. She has
attended many summer workshops such as: the Baroque Performance Institute of
Oberlin, Tafelmusik's Workshop in Toronto, and the Early Music International
Course in Portugal. These workshops have allowed her to work with
harpsichordists Lisa Crawford, Charlotte Nediger, and Jacques Ogg. In addition to maintaining a private studio, Susan has been on faculty at Schoolcraft College. She has also given numerous workshops and lecture-recitals in the Detroit area, all focusing on early music. In collaboration with baroque violinist Lara Hall she directed the first ever Baroque Orchestra Workshop this winter at the University of Michigan, coaching string players in historical performance practice and elements of baroque style. Susan is a founding member of the baroque ensemble Anaphantasia, which recently performed at the Bloomington Early Music Festival. She has also worked with counter-tenors Andrew Pickett, Colin Ainsworth - with whom further collaboration is expected. Other performances have taken her to Shippensburg University, Alcorn State University, and to the London Early Music Festival in Ontario. Continuing to perform widely as both a soloist and continuo player, she is working on a Doctorate in Harpsichord at the Eastman School of Music. |
